We had the entire day free until we had to catch the ferry. Sara Kokkila and I went walking and exploring all over. We began at a Marina Museum because we wanted to see the Venetian Firkas Fortress and the Siavo Bastion, but it was closed on Sunday. Instead, we went looking for our own way to get up on the ancient city walls. We found an area to get up and went climbing around up there for a while. From here, we could see the water and the harbor, a view of the old town and even the new city. We found a cool green plant with pod-like things that squirted seeds and green ooze when you stepped on it. We thought those were rather fun.
We also spent some time looking down all the streets in the old town. They were filled with shops. For lunch, we walked out to the lighthouse and sat atop the wall and ate our picnic food while watching the waves crash against the rocks. I like being by the water. For the afternoon, we found the public gardens with a tiny zoo. Here we saw canaries, ducks, peacocks, and a Kri-Kri. There was a gigantic tree in the park and it had roots growing down from its massive, smooth branches. This is the coolest tree I’ve ever seen. After the park in the new city, we headed back to the old city and explored more streets. We found another section of the Venitian wall to climb up and we got another view of the old city and the lighthouse from above.
By 7:00 we were completely exhausted and it was time to catch the bus the port, Souda. Form here, we took another night ferry back to Piraeus port. When the ferry took off, a waiter on the top deck passed out Raki, a liquor popular in Crete that is drunk before a meal or when visiting. I didn’t upgrade to a cabin or airplane seats, so I had to find a place outside on the deck. There were couches where I made a bed to sleep for the night. One other guy, Ben, from the trip stayed on the deck seats with me. We had a major study session for our Greek Language final and then tried to get a bit of sleep before arriving in Piraeus again. It was a full weekend and a good one at that.
